a giant philanthropic organization and one of many examples of His Royal Highness’s magnanimity.

The Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud Foundation was incepted in 1995 to provide social services and health care for the elderly and comprehensive rehabilitation programs for the disabled, in addition to a number of other ambitious housing, educational and medical programs.

Within a record short period, the Foundation emerged as one of the largest of its kind in the world. Some of its humanitarian ventures have already been accomplished, while many others are currently underway in Saudi Arabia and abroad. The Foundation’s accomplishments include the Sultan bin Abdul Aziz’s City for Humanitarian Services, Humanitarian Housing Projects, Center for Science and Technology, Special Education Program and Arab and Islamic Education Program at the University of California.

At the cost of SR 1.2 billion, the Sultan bin Abd Al-Aziz City for Humanitarian Services is the biggest integrated medical rehabilitation facility in the world. Standing on 16 acres of land to the north of Riyadh, the City encompasses a complete medical diagnosis center, 18 operating theaters, 400 beds for the elderly, the handicapped and children with special needs, a recovery center, an education and training center and out-patient facilities.

The Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Humanitarian Housing Projects are built in Tabuk, Hail and the Southern Region. Each complex comprises 100 detached and fully furnished houses for homeless families, with full amenities and services, including mosques, schools, medical facilities and social centers.

The Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Center for Science and Technology is a state-of-the-art facility in the city of Al-Khobar, eastern Saudi Arabia that seeks to encourage learning and enhance the technological capabilities of Saudi youth.

The Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Special Education Program was begun in 1996 at the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain to support the training of specialists from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on latest advances in the rehabilitation of the physically or mentally handicapped.

The Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Arab and Islamic Studies Program at the University of California Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Berkley was launched in 1998 with a multimillion dollar endowment to support post-doctoral fellowships, visiting professorships, research and the construction of new quarters for the Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Berkley.
