WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR 1426H - 2006G

KING FAISAL INTERNATIONAL PRIZE

 

 

Riyadh, 25 Dhu Al-Qa'dah - 27 December 2005, HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal, Director of King Faisal Foundation, tonight announced the winners of the King Faisal International Prize.

The prize for Science (Topic: Mathematics) has been awarded jointly to:

 

Professor
Simon Kirwan Donaldson

(UK)

President of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College, London

Professor
Mudumbai Seshachalu Narasimhan

(India)

Honorary Fellow, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in India

for their seminal contributions to theories which have strengthened the links between mathematics and physics, and helped provide a rigorous foundation for physical theories giving a very good description of the laws of matter at the sub-nuclear level. This has helped establish strong ties with the formulation of quantum chromodynamics for which the King Faisal Prize was given last year (in physics).

 

The Prize for Medicine (Topic: Biology of Vascular Inflammation) has been awarded to:

 

Professor
Michael Anthony Gimbrone, Jr.

(USA)

Professor of Pathology, Harvard Medical School, and
Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital

Professor Gimbrone, Jr., has more than 250 publications in renowned international journals over the past 4 decades. He has made fundamental contributions to the field of vascular biology. He has pioneered the culturing of human endothelial and smooth muscle cells, and discovered endothelial leucocyte adhesion molecules. He identified three genes with potential arthroprotective activities. He developed a novel in vitro flow model to simulate pulsatile shear stress waveforms encountered by the endothelium in the arterial circulation which reveals the unique responsiveness of endothehal cells.

The Prize for Arabic Language and Literature (Topic: The Arabic Language in Modern Linguistics) has been awarded jointly to

(Morocco)

Director of the Institute for Study and Research of Arabization and
Professor of Arabic and Comparative Linguistics, Mohammad V University

 

Professor Omar has been awarded the Prize in recognition of his distinguished efforts - over the past fifty years - to establish modern Arabic linguistics, an endeavor that has been reinforced by his profound knowledge of Arabic language heritage and the principles and methods of modern linguistic analyses.

Professor Fehri has been awarded the Prize in recognition of his tireless pursuit of modern linguistic theories in an effort to reconstruct the classical Arabic linguistic theory in the light of modern linguistic concepts

 

The Prize for Islamic Studies (Topic: The Origins of Islamic Jurisprudence) was withheld due to lack of sufficiently meritorious nominations.

The Prize for Service to Islam has been awarded to:

 

H. E. Shaikh Salih bin Abd Al-Rahman Al-Husayyin

(Saudi Arabia)

President of the Affairs of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam and Al-Masjid An-Nabawii

Shaikh Yusuf bin Jasim bin Muhammad Al-Hidji

(Kuwait)

President of the International Islamic Charitable Organization

Shaikh Al-Husayyin has been awarded the Prize in recognition of his prominent role in preaching the principles of righteousness, philanthropy, and particularly moderation and tolerance. Apart from promoting those and other principles of Islamic Da’awa (Call), Shaikh Al-Husayyin is also a recognized researcher in Islamic economics, especially its ability to accommodate contemporary economic ideas. He is also an ardent supporter of education, serving on the Supreme Councils of five Saudi Universities.

Shaikh Al-Hidji is recognized for his distinguished contributions to Islamic Da’awa, education and philanthropy. He is a member of the Boards of Trustees of four Islamic universities in Africa and Asia and initiator of the College of Shariya (Islamic Law) at Kuwait University. He is also the founder or co-founder and chairman of several national and international charity and relief organizations, and founding president of the Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society.
